The Bad Witch in the Wizard of Oz always scared me.

“I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!”

    **shivers**

It was the flying monkees that scared me. I knew they were coming for me next!

  • 3 richard // Aug 26, 2008 at 9:55 am

Yeah – those monkeys were eerie…but how about a freakin’ tree that moves??!!

  • 4 Coleman Shedman // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:00 am

It’s a great movie…with one of the greatest movie songs ever.

  • 5 richard // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:04 am

    10. Big (1988) – This is a great fantasy movie…and especially since it was made when it was. Most good fantasy films (IMHO) were made before 1960!
    9. The Thief of Bagdad (1924) – Never saw this.
    8. Groundhog Day (1993) – HATED this.
    7. Harvey (1950) – I’m a HUGE James Stewart fan but for some reason I never cared for this.
    6. Field of Dreams (1989) – Yep, this is a really great one.
    5. Miracle on 34th St (1947) – Classic – one of the best films ever made.
    4. King Kong (1933) – again, CLASSIC.
    3. It’s a Wonderful Life (1947) – One of my favorite movies ever…maybe THE favorite.
    2. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) – Meh.
    1. The Wizard of Oz (1939) – Another classic. i can’t argue with this being stamped “number 1.”

Where’s Lost Horizon? Though I never much cared for it, where are Edward Scissorhands and Fantasia?

  • 6 Coleman Shedman // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:07 am

Fantasia is on the Animation list. I picked up Lost Horizon but haven’t watched it yet. I’d prefer Edward Scissorhands to Big, Groundhog Day, and Field of Dreams. Can’t argue with the top 5, all are great in my opinion.

  • 7 richard // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:08 am

Groundhog Day and Scrooged are two REALLY overrated films in my opinion.

  • 8 Heather // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:11 am

I love those films. They are on the regular holiday rotation.

  • 9 Coleman Shedman // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:12 am

I have to say, I was surprised to see it on the last. I don’t dislike it (or Scrooged) but I don’t think either of them is great. They’re ok. Sounds like you just don’t like Bill Murray, hater.

  • 10 Heather // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:12 am

With the exception of King Kong, I would not really consider 3-10 “fantasy” movies.

    Where is Labyrinth? Damn.

  • 11 Robert // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:15 am

What is the definition of a “fantasy” film?

Would that be, like “10″? :)

  • 12 Coleman Shedman // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:16 am

    Pans Labyrinth, maybe.

  • 13 richard // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:17 am

    Coleman Shedman (12) – I STILL haven’t see that.

  • 14 Heather // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:18 am

    That’s a good one too. :)

  • 15 richard // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:18 am

    Heather (10) – Harvey?

  • 16 Robert // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:19 am

    10. Big (1988) – blah.
    9. The Thief of Bagdad (1924) – Never saw this.
    8. Groundhog Day (1993) – This movie is funny. Bill Murray is freaking funny.
    7. Harvey (1950) – Never saw it.
    6. Field of Dreams (1989) – I do like this movie. It’s one of my favorite sports movies.
    5. Miracle on 34th St (1947) – Crap. Don’t care for it.
    4. King Kong (1933) – It’s good, but not one I’d watch, and wanna see again any time soon.
    3. It’s a Wonderful Life (1947) – ARGH I HATE THIS MOVIE. Stupid bells.
    2. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) – Probably one of the best produced “fantasy’ movies, and certainly one of the few I would consider actually a fantasy movie on this list.
    1. The Wizard of Oz (1939) – Classic smassic. I don’t care one way or the other on this one, but I wouldn’t put it at the top of my list.

  • 17 Coleman Shedman // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:20 am

ONE definition of fantasy: imaginative fiction featuring especially strange settings and grotesque characters.

ONE for Fantastic: based on fantasy : not real…conceived or seemingly conceived by unrestrained fancy…so extreme as to challenge belief.

Pretty broad category. By those definitions, I suppose they all fit.

  • 18 Robert // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:21 am

Seems like there are a lot of movies that would be “fantasy” that are more fantastic than most of those moves.

Metropolis? It’s a fantastic fantasy movie… made in the silent era.

How does Star Wars not rate a listing?

2001: A Space Odyssey? Talk about FANTASY.

Undoubtedly there are many, many more.

  • 19 Robert // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:23 am

How is The Dark Knight not on this list? :)

  • 20 Coleman Shedman // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:24 am

Robert, I think those fall into the Science Fiction category. Although I could see where one could consider them fantasy as well. They overlap a lot and I don’t think there are hard and fast rules. Richard, I’d put 10 in the comedy category…although it would be nowhere near my “top 10.”

  • 21 Coleman Shedman // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:25 am

List came out before Dark Knight was released…this past June.

  • 22 richard // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:26 am

Coleman – Nah, Bill Murray is great – I just don’t like EVERYTHING he’s ever done.

    Meatballs, Caddyshack, Broken Flowers…great.

Ghostbusters and Lost in Translation were pretty good. He was good in Wild Things.

Stripes, Garfield, What About Bob?, Groundhog Day and Scrooged…not my cup of tea.

I still want to see Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums.

  • 23 richard // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:27 am

    Coleman Shedman – I didn’t mention 10.

  • 24 Coleman Shedman // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:28 am

    Sorry, that was Robert.

  • 25 Robert // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:29 am

10 might be a comedy, but it’s fantasy to some people. :)

  • 26 Robert // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:31 am

So, any comic book based movie, would they be in the fantasy or sci-fi?

  • 27 Heather // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:33 am

If I were a video store owner I would put Scrooged, Groundhog Day and Big under “Comedy.”

Fantasy to me is LOTR, Labyrinth, Pan’s Labyrinth, Stardust, Peter Pan, Excalibur. Pretty much it has to have sword fighting or something like it (Star Wars), a fairy or mermaid or gnome or all three…

  • 28 Coleman Shedman // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:38 am

If you were a video store owner, you’d be in big trouble….who the hell rents videos at a store any more? I can’t remember the last time I rented a movie…although Mrs. S get’s them from netflix from time to time.

  • 29 Robert // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:39 am

    I just buy them anyways.

    Rent: blah.

  • 30 richard // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:43 am

I’m a big Netflix guy. I don’t buy that many anymore.

  • 31 Coleman Shedman // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:51 am

What was your last “buy-worthy” dvd, Richard?

  • 32 Heather // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:54 am

    Smartass Coleman.

  • 33 richard // Aug 26, 2008 at 10:55 am

    John Adams.
